In the project, Shanghai Petrochemical worked together with China Construction Eighth Engineering Group Co., Ltd. and other companies to design a heavy-duty cross beam using 48K large tow carbon fibre composite rebars. The cross beam is not only lightweight, high-strength and durable, but also has multiple properties such as fire resistance, impact resistance and bending resistance. Compared with traditional steel cross beams, the use of carbon fibre composite materials reduces weight by approximately 50%.
Up to now, the carbon fibre composite rebars developed and produced by Shanghai Petrochemical have been used in other projects such as the Qingdao Haikou river bridge, in China’s Shandong province. With the rapid growth of Chinese carbon fibre production capacity, the cost of carbon fibre reinforcement has dropped significantly, and the application of carbon fibre composite materials in the field of civil engineering will be more cost-effective, according to Shanghai Petrochemical.
Shanghai Petrochemical says it will develop thermoplastic carbon fibre rebar materials to solve the problem that traditional thermosetting carbon fibre rebar materials cannot be reprocessed on site, thereby forming a new generation of all-carbon fibre rebar material construction technology.
